Health Testing

All Cindaires dogs have been extensively DNA health tested for all known genetic disorders.  In addition, all puppies will also be DNA health tested to give owners peace of mind.

A DNA health test requires a saliva or blood sample to be sent to a specialist laboratory approved by the Kennel Club.  A health check at the vets is secondary to this and should not be confused as a vet can only determine the general health of a puppy and not confirm any genetic or hereditary disorders.

DNA testing for the following disorders is not currently a requirement of the Kennel Club, however, they are known within the breed and therefore advised;

CMR2 - Canine Multi-Focal Retinopathy

HUU - Hyperuricosuria

PLL - Primary Lens Laxation

WVD1 - Von Willebrands Type 1

DM - Degenerative Myleopathy

PH1 - Primary Hyperoxaluria Type 1

MH - Malignant Hyperthermia

IVDD - Interverted Disc Disease

NA - Neonatal Ataxia

PRA prcd - Progressive Reinal Atrophy

CDDY - Chondrodystophy

What does this mean for you buying a puppy?

DNA health testing gives three results - clear, carrier or affected.

In an ideal world we would endeavour to breed 2 x clear dogs to guarantee puppies clear of all genetic disorders.  However, as the Coton de Tulear is a rare breed and has a small gene pool, it is important not to discard carrier dogs which are a good representation of the breed.  Breeding a Carrier to a clear dog will produce 50% clear puppies and 50% carrier puppies.  Both these breeding pactices are acceptable and those puppies who are carriers of a gene/disease should in future only be mated to a clear dog.
